Extract from a review by Winnie Durdant Hollamby in The Mother... In "How Children Learn at Home" authors Alan Thomas and Harriet Pattison describe the alchemy that takes place in informal learning situations. Based on various interviews with families choosing home as their place of learning as opposed to school, Thomas and Pattison explore: * the scope for informal learning within children's everyday lives * the role of parents and others in informal learning * how children proactively develop their own learning agendas. As a family we have been learning from life for nearly seven years. It has been an awesome, mind-expanding experience that has not been without its trials as well. We have rarely doubted the rightness of it, even if we have not anlaysed it to the degree that the authors have in this book. What was great about reading it was that it supported our experiences entirely. It helped me to relax even more with the concept that I can totally trust that as long as we are providing an environment of encouragement and support, our girls will continue to discover their own questions for life and their own unique, learning path. In their own time! This book addresses some of the mysteries that have so far eluded those trying to set school curriculums and governement eduction policy. ... Overall a fantastic read. Whether you're new to the idea of home education, an established home educating parent or an educationalist or teacher - read this book. You will gain inspiration from the evidence presented. |
