Dr Alan Thomas is a Visiting Fellow a the University of London Institute of Education.  Alan Thomas is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.  Alan Thomas writes ...

I am a developmental psychologist with a very long term interest in how children learn which led me to study home education.  I've been a teacher at all levels, from primary school through to university in the UK, Holland, Spain and Australia.  For the last 10 years I've been a Visiting Fellow at the London University Institute of Education.  My two children went to school; one loved it and one tolerated it.  When I started out to research home education I intended studying families taking advantage of one-to-one structured teaching.  While I certainly came across such families I also discovered informal learning which continues to fascinate me.  It's not just that it challenges professional views of learning nearly always based on how children learn in school.  It's much more profound than that because it's about home educating families themselves advancing the scientific understanding of the funadmental nature of learning.
